Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability that significantly impairs a child’s ability to understand, process, and manipulate numerical concepts. It typically manifests when a child commences formal mathematics instruction. Research indicates that dyscalculia may be associated with decreased volumes of gray and white matter in critical brain areas, particularly the parietal cortex, which encompasses the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), and potentially in the frontal and occipito-temporal regions. The condition commonly presents with various symptoms, which include:

  • Difficulty recognizing numbers and understanding their value; may reverse numbers.
  • Struggling to make sense of numbers and math concepts.
  • Poor automaticity and inconsistent methods for solving math problems.
  • Trouble with sequencing and patterns.
  • Difficulty understanding schedules and spatial awareness.
  • Difficulty estimating amounts, distances, or speed. Difficulty comprehending multi-step math problems.
